Well I got a new toy for my camera.
A GPS unit that plugs into my Nikon D200.
Why does someone need a GPS for there camera? Well really you don’t.
For the nature of photography I pursue… I do.
I travel alot and take so many pictures that it’s going to be so nice to know (in the future… a year from now) where it was when I took that picture.
I think about my 3 months and 50,000 pictures in Europe. If only I knew where I was when I took half of those pictures. I had a audio recorder and tried my best to record the towns i was in… but that was infrequent and not as specific as this is going to be.
I will put up pictures later of my setup but it’s a tiny little card about the size of a credit card but about 1/2 inch thick and a chord going to the camera. It’s not accurate down to the foot but rather will put me in the ballpark… well even better about 10-20 meters of fluctuation. It stores the longitude latitude, altitude and correct world time onto the file info (exif) of each picture file. Later on my programs like Photoshop or Photoshop lightroom I am able to see that information.
It will be a great help for when I start adding my massive database of pictures to the Envision Project and perhaps there will be an app. of the projects website that specifically deals with images that have GPS data. (something already being done by some small websites using the API from google maps/earth… amusing but not amazingly exciting)
For now there’s not much I actually do with the GPS data… but the day will come when I will be everlastingly greatful that I had the foreknowledge and planning to do it.
If you have any questions how I did. Where I got my equipment from and how it helps, let me know.
